She still can’t say it years after
the hotel bed they met in when
his wife cited irreconcilable differences and he called her and she danced barefoot through wet grass though she hadn’t seen him since
his hands slipped beneath her silk dress at his wedding and he asked her then to say it but she never could not even when
she was sixteen years old, his fingers circling her heat.
Hannah Persaud won this year’s Flash 500 Flash Fiction Competition, the InkTears Short Story Contest in 2017, and the Fresher Writing Prize in 2016. In 2018 she was shortlisted for the Cambridge Short Story Prize.
