William Patrick, Reading to Darkness

Reading to Darkness

Back-stage, I question my sanity,
suppress vomit, struggle to find
student-free space for deep breaths.

Louise smiles, nods, looks at me as if
to lead a child by the hand across
the stage I tread, awaiting calamity.

I crave a lectern to lean on
with what I hope is majesty —
hide trembling legs behind.

Then lights shine. Blind
I read to the darkness.
Magic happens.

I can’t say I’m magical,
my words are worthy,
but we come alive.

For three minutes
I forget to fear,
forsake irony,
am me.

William Patrick is who he is, but hopes you enjoy reading him.
